Russian military plane crashes in Siberia

The Russian Defence Ministry said on Monday that one of its planes had crashed in northeast Siberia, but that nobody had been killed in the accident, Russian news agencies reported. The plane crashed at 12:07 local time, a law enforcement source told Russian news agency Tass. The defence ministry said 16 people were seriously injured, correcting earlier reports that 27 had died. “Three soldiers are in grave condition, 13 others have sustained medium severity injuries, all the rest are undergoing a medical examination”, the source said. The aircraft, which took off from Koltsovo Airport, in the city of Yekaterinburg, was carrying 32 officers and seven crew. Reports suggested that only five of 39 onboard had survived the crash. The Russian Emergency Ministry has deployed three Mi-8 helicopters for the search and rescue operation.
